Star and Shamrock: Irish Deli. Jewish Tavern

I’ve discovered the young professional’s equivalent of the college student’s late-night pizza: latkes. These hot, delicious, glorified hash browns dipped in sour cream fortify the stomach in preparation for another round of Harp. Wait, sorry, am I confusing you? Latkes—the traditional Jewish potato treat—and Harp—the weaker, more enjoyable beer imported from Erin’s Isle? Where does one find such a heavenly combination?

Star and Shamrock Tavern and Deli. Irish Deli. Jewish Tavern. Haha, just kidding! Then again, maybe not. After all, Star and Shamrock does pour pints of “The Chosen Beer,” He’brew. Anyway, it’s the latest restaurant to open its doors on burgeoning H St. Great St.

If you frequent the area, you know that the entrepreneur’s got to sport a unique value prop to hang with the cool, eclectic establishments on H St. What, with a live music venue, indoor mini golf, German Biergarten set to open shortly, a pie place, wine bar, and vaudeville exhibition on the strip, it’s hard to stand out. Then, again if you’re Jason, the visionary behind Star and Shamrock, you know that the sight of a green shamrock fitted in a gold Star of David will turn some heads and beckon the curious.

The bar is unique, the owner approachable, the staff attentive. Just remember to visit Star and Shamrock with a clear conscious, because, as Chystina Z on Yelp so perfectly observed, “Jews and Irish… apparently this place wants to evoke guilt in all of us.”

Amen. L’Chaim. Slainte.
